ARC Summer Institute
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) collaborated with the U.S. Department of
Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to provide
a two-week residential, hands-on learning institute for high school students and
teachers focusing on math, science, and technology. The 2005 summer programs are
administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and
were held July 9 - 22, 2005. Twenty-three students and fourteen teachers from
throughout Appalachia came together to participate in a hands-on learning program
that focused on the aplication of math and science principles.
Volunteers from the CCSD helped mentor the high school students. Members of the Networking and Computing Technologies Division (NCTD) led the Web Design and Development group. This group's project was to develop a website for the summer institute. The students were taught the important steps in the web development process, such as planning, information architecture, design, and construction.
The Multi-Task group was led by employees from the Computational Science and Engineering Division (CSE). The students in this group explored many of the programs here at ORNL. Some of the areas that were explored included the Chemical/Biological area, the OSCAR program (Objective Supply Capability Adaptive Redesign), SensorNet, and many other interesting sites.
