Scientific Data Management

Scientific data management is critical to advanced research in many areas of science and engineering. Today’s computational and scientific techniques are capable of generating large amounts of highly complex data which must be effectively preserved and managed for future analysis and distribution. A key characteristic of scientific data is the highly dynamic nature of the data and data schema. This raises significant data management issues which traditional approaches to data management can’t cost-effectively address. To ensure the production of high-quality data sets, we involve scientists in the data management process from project inception to completion. This involvement is achieved without distracting the scientists from their primary research and in fact, this partnership allows them to focus on research. By insuring proper metadata collection, and data management throughout the scientific process, this paradigm maximizes project return by improving the quality, understanding, and availability of data to other scientists and end-users.

Through our long-term involvement in the operation of national and international scientific data centers, and co-location with researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, we have broad expertise in the arena of scientific data management and have developed technologies to efficiently provide data management, data archival, and state-of-the-art data delivery to the scientific community.
