The
project aims to incorporate peripherals that will enhance scientists' sense of
immersion while using various display venues. A scientist can use a peripherals
like a keyboard and a mouse when viewing and manipulating data on a single
monitor or on two monitors. However when there are larger display venues like
ORNL's EVEREST facility and other tiled display environments a mouse and
keyboard can become obtrusive. My task was to analyze the EVEREST facility and
determine what type of tracking technology can be incorporated into the EVEREST
facility. From the analysis and research on tracking technology I then made
recommendations to my mentor on what type of product that should be
bought. I also negotiated with the vendors of the tracking products and managed
to get two demo products , so that we may test it out with the EVEREST facility
with out having to buy anything upfront. My next task was to test an older
version of a particular tracking device to see if any of the parts could be
incorporated into the newer version to defray cost. Another task that I had to
do was once again to analyze the EVEREST facility and determine what type of
camera would be suitable for broadcasting video via the internet. I had to take
in consideration the amount of lumens that the projectors produced and the
darkness. This high contrast was an obstacle that I had to overcome.
