Experimental Response of Nacre's Biopolymer
The mechanical stress of protein fibers between two abalone nacre platelets are shown in Figure A and Figure B. The corresponding mechanical response of the organic interface is obtained using a atomic force microscope (AFM). The unfolding events (sawtooth pattern) of the modules of the protein fibers are clearly seen in the Force-extension diagram.
