Founded in 1866, Fisk University is one of America’s finest institutions of higher education. While the University has a strong foundation in the liberal arts, we pride ourselves in our contribution to the nation’s ranks of great scientists and businesspersons. During our 140 year legacy, we have consistently produced graduates with the intellectual and ethical aptitude to constructively engage and change the world. |
The Research Alliance in Math and Science (RAMS) Program is based on the belief that national laboratories and universities, working hand in hand, offer the best opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of a diverse workforce. The program is sponsered by the Mathematical, Information, and Computing Sciences office of the DOE and is adminstrated through the Computing and Computiotinal Sciences Directorate. Fisk's mission today, as officially described by the Board of Trustees in a statement most recently revised in 1986, remains that of an institution committed to teaching, to the liberal arts, and to the preparation of leaders. Fisk also is committed to involving both its faculty and its most advanced students in original research - since the passing on of the liberal arts tradition is not merely the transmission of dead or static knowledge; rather the liberal arts tradition involves the recognition that knowledge is continually developing. As stated formally in the March, 1986 statement of the Fisk University Board of Trustees, the mission of Fisk is “to provide liberal arts education of the highest quality. The ultimate goal is to prepare students to be skilled, resourceful, and imaginative leaders who will address effectively the challenges of life in a technological society, a pluralistic nation, and a multicultural world."
